Wendella's in-house Education Department

At Wendella, we pride ourselves on providing all of our customers with not only an enjoyable and safe cruise on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River, but also with providing an opportunity to learn about the architectural heritage and rich history of Chicago. To this end, we created our own, in-house Education Department, the only one in Chicago. The goal is to assure that information presented is accurate and up to date, that all presentations are of the highest quality and that docents and narrators present the city in its’ most positive light.

Candidates for docents and narrators are screened and then put through a rigorous program which prepares them to narrate a personalized interpretation of a body of knowledge which must be included in each tour. Because we do not use volunteers, our docents and narrators are consistent in their deliveries and pride themselves on their individualized interpretations.

This past year we have initiated specialized tours working with a variety of museums and local historians to expand our educational outreach programs. Our ethnic tours with the Polish Museum and the Mexican Fine Arts Museum, as well as a specialized program on the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, continue to emphasize our commitment to educating the public about our wonderful city.

Over the years we have come to know our audiences and realize that most visitors are very enthusiastic about learning about the city and its’ architecture, but want the information presented to be accessible and in keeping with their diverse backgrounds. For this reason, all our tours provide a comprehensible blend of facts, details and trivia presented as an armchair lecture. And, of course, when required, we can provide focused tours for architects, engineers, school groups and community organizations. We know Chicago and we encourage you to come aboard !
